TAKE UP THE TOWN CENTRE CHALLENGE

Morpeth & District Chamber of trade has already formally objected to edge-of-town development proposals.

BUT THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE

Supermarket & Car Park Development Proposal

Key to Plan:

  1. 50,000 sq ft supermarket on two levels:
Upper level retail hall, above flood level
Lower level storage and plant facility with anti-flooding provision
  2. 324 short-term car parking spaces on upper level, above potential flooding, accessed from Dacre Street roundabout, with pedestrian access to supermarket.
195 long-term car parking spaces on lower level accessed from Staithes Lane
  3. Staithes Lane widened to 2 full traffic lanes plus residents' parking provision. Outlook landscaped with trees and bushes. Shoppers would NOT use this access to supermarket.
  4. Landscaped wildlife corridor along burn side. Access over by bridge.
  5. Junction of Dark Lane with Staithes Lane widened, roundabout removed, 4-way traffic lights with pedestrian crossings installed.

We believe this plan offers HUGE advantages for Morpeth:

  • Deliverable now – without the need for the upstream flood works
  • Delivers more long stay and short stay car parking in town
  • Answers the need for greater choice
  • Provides a viable alternative to out of town development
  • If the above are delivered Morpeth can robustly
    reject edge-of-town retailing
